Heavy rains and floods are in the forecast for Friday the 13 thanks to the ongoing Kona low storm.

The City and County of Honolulu announced the opening of emergency shelters for residents impacted by the Kona storm system.

Governor Josh Green, M.D. announced closures for all public and charter schools and state offices on Oʻahu, Kaua‘i and in Maui County on Friday, March 13, due to severe weather expected across the islands.

Across Hawai‘i, landslides can strike during heavy rain, hurricanes, kona lows or other major storms. Steep slopes, saturated soils and unstable terrain can trigger slides that move quickly and without warning.

Most of the year, trade winds and a temperature inversion control the dispersion of vog from Kīlauea. The inversion forms around 6,000 to 8,000 feet and traps vog below to keep it near Hawaiʻi Island.
